Abbott House, the New York-based nonprofit serving children, families, and the developmentally disabled, to launch the New Generation PRIDE Model of Practice (Parent Resources for Information, Development, and Education) on December 14, 2020. The pilot training program will support foster and adoptive families as team members in child protection and use a trauma- informed training approach to assist with the care of children.
Abbott House has a total of 200 foster boarding homes across the lower Hudson Valley and New York City and serves approximately 400 children annually. With the high number of children entering foster care, the agency is committed to recruiting foster parents, reducing foster-parent turnover and connecting children to long-lasting, positive foster parent relationships.
“Nurturing a child with a history of trauma can be emotionally and physically challenging for not only the child but also the foster parent,” said James Kaufman, President and CEO. “We are proud to be leading the way in implementing the PRIDE Model as part of our commitment to achieving excellence in stable, family-based care for vulnerable children, ”said Kaufman.
“Our goal is to improve our onboarding/training process so it is more flexible and useful for parents who are juggling hectic schedules. It will include less in-person meetings and self-paced training options,” said Antoinette Grant, Vice President of Foster Care Programs.
